Where connections are made

Loneliness and isolation amongst older people is on the rise, with serious implications to health and well-being. According to Age UK, half of all people aged 75 and over live alone and 1 in 10 people aged over 65 say they always or often feel lonely.

Charities like Age UK offer advice and suggestions on how the older generation can prevent the feeling of loneliness such as keeping in touch with friends and family via telephone or using the internet to connect with others along with becoming more actively involved with your community. Depending on where you live this can mean joining asinging or walking group, local book clubs, bridge or even bingo!

The Fairways Retirement Village in Chippenham has been developed by family owned Freeman Retirement Living in partnership with MHA a national charity providing care, accommodation and support services for more than 16,000 older people. The concept of the retirement village is to take care of the important things in life so that you can enjoy yourself.

You can own your own beautiful home, remain as independent as you like but enjoy the benefits of community living. The Friends of the Fairways is a club anyone can join to see what life at the Fairways is really like.  They run a variety of organised social events and meet on the third Friday of every month to enjoy events in the company of other like-minded people. From tea dances to cinema matinees there is something for everyone. Upcoming events include the Mat Bowling Tournament on the 20th June, where invitees are welcomed to battle it out on the indoor bowling green, prizes are awarded for the winners in this friendly match! The following month celebrates all things summer with a local Chippenham jazz band, The Celebration Jazz Band, who will set the mood for a day while you enjoy a glass of Pimms, delicious British strawberries and cream and make new friends.

All events are free so if you are interested in becoming a Friend of the Fairways register and book your place by calling 01249 448112.
